Chances are that if you’ve been reading this blog for a week+, you’re more than familiar with my love of older (read: senior) dogs – and not just ’cause I’m guardian to two of them myself. (Ralphie and Kaylee, holla!) Due to their age, seniors can be harder to rehome than their younger puppy counterparts – which is a shame, seeing as they’ve already been around the block and mostly know the ins and outs of living with humans. Their lack of excitability and puppy antics also makes seniors a good choice for older people. Besides, even the youngest pup will one day grown into a wizened old fella (dog willing) – and adopting a dog, whatever age she may be, is a lifelong responsibility. Advancing age – in all its bittersweet grace – isn’t an acceptable reason to break this commitment. We all age; perpetual youth simply isn’t part of the package. The pup you opt for now will one day grown into a “special needs” senior himself. (As will you, dear grasshopper!)
Take dear Missy here. A gorgeous golden Cocker Spaniel mix, this older lady is currently staying with Animals Best Friends. Though she’s dealing with some age-related issues – diminished hearing and cataracts – she’s still one happy, active, loving gal.

This beautiful buff colored gal is Missy. Missy is a very sweet, petite little Cocker Spaniel mix. Her DOB is 02/16/01. Missy has some hearing loss and cataracts. She gets along well with other dogs and has ignored the cats. She likes to go on walks and is good in the car. Missy is a happy girl who likes people, she wags her tail when someone comes in the room and she likes to follow you around the house. Missy is housetrained, she will let you know when she needs to go out. Missy is looking for that furever home to finish out the rest of her life receiving unconditional love…

While searching Petfinder for this week’s Friend in need, I came across this listing for two coonhound boys. That’s it; no name, just “Coonhounds.” How sad is that? Can you imagine – not having a name? Of course, they probably do have names – or did in another life – but sadly, those days are long behind them. And to not even be considered worthy of even a temporary moniker. Sigh. At least these guys aren’t numbered, consumable item styley. That’s something, right?
Anyhow, I found it all so terribly depressing that I had to share. Someone bring these guys home and spoil them with plenty of noms and snorgles, mkay? They so deserve it!

Treeing Walker Coonhound: An adoptable dog in Gladstone, MO
Large • Adult • MaleThe picture just doesn’t do these two justice at all! We think they were abandoned outside our shelter when we were closed (we found one early in the morning and a citizen brought the other in the next day). Both are just as sweet as can be. Both are a bit timid of strangers at first but warm up very quickly. These two are young (about a year old) and would make fantastic family dogs. Please come see them today!
